Biochar – Small Chunk (2–6mm)

Soil Structure • Microbial Habitat • Nutrient Retention

Our Small Biochar is made using ONLY clean forestry residuals, processed through a controlled pyrolysis system to create a stable, porous material. With an average particle size of 2–6mm, this grade is ideal for blending into compost, worm castings, potting mixes, or garden soil to enhance structure, microbial life, and nutrient retention.

This biochar is uncharged, meaning it contains no nutrients or microbes when dry. It should be inoculated before planting—either by mixing with compost or nutrient-rich teas, or by adding to soil a few weeks before use to allow for natural charging.

🌿 Benefits

  • Improves aeration and drainage in compacted or heavy soils

  • Increases soil porosity and moisture retention

  • Provides ideal habitat for beneficial microbes and fungi

  • Holds nutrients for slow release, reducing leaching

  • Helps buffer pH and supports soil health long-term

  • Useful in composting to stabilize nutrients and reduce odor

🌱 How to Use

Inoculation Methods

  • Compost Charging: Mix 1:1 with finished compost or worm castings. Keep moist for 1–2 weeks.

  • Compost Tea Soak: Soak biochar in actively aerated compost tea or nutrient solution (e.g. fish hydrolysate) for 24–48 hours.

  • Direct Soil Charging: Mix into beds or soil and let sit 2–4 weeks before planting to allow for microbial colonization.

Note: Biochar is dusty and can get all over your hands. We recommend wearing gloves when handling.

Application Rates

  • Garden Beds: Blend 2–10 cm deep into soil

  • Potting Mixes: Use at 5–25% by volume

  • Compost or Worm Bins: Add at 5–15% by volume to improve nutrient retention and microbial activity

 Specs

  • Particle Size: 2–6mm (Small Chunk)

  • Carbon: >75%

  • Ash: <10%
