Fungal Food is a blend crafted to promote fungal-dominant biology in your compost and compost teas. Designed to be mixed directly into our Optimize Organics Compost & Castings Blend (or a well-made, mature homemade compost), this formula supports the development of beneficial fungal networks before tea brewing.
Fungal Food is designed to create ideal conditions for fungal dominance by supplying the right food sources and environmental support. Organic oat flour and wheat bran offer slow-release, complex carbohydrates—exactly the kind of long-chain sugars that fungi prefer. Kelp and alfalfa meals provide trace minerals and natural plant compounds that stimulate fungal metabolism and support hyphal development. Biochar serves as a porous structure where fungi can anchor and expand, while also helping retain moisture—crucial for fungal colonization. Frass contributes chitin, which selectively feeds chitin-degrading fungi and supports beneficial soil populations. Humic acid improves soil structure and increases cation exchange capacity, making the soil more hospitable to fungal networks. Finally, rock dust delivers slow-releasing minerals that fungi can weather and cycle over time, further encouraging their long-term establishment in the soil.
Application:
Pre-Charge Compost
Mix thoroughly into Optimize Organics Compost & Castings Blend (or high-quality homemade compost). Once combined, let the mix sit for 7–10 days in a sealed or covered container to allow fungal hyphae to establish and colonize the material.
After this incubation period, the compost will be primed for use in fungal-dominant compost teas—ideal for improving soil structure, nutrient cycling, and plant immunity in living soil systems.
Topdress
Apply around the base of established plants or mix into the soil before planting to encourage long-term fungal colonization and healthy soil biology.
