How to Brew Your Compost Tea

Start by filling your bucket or barrel with clean, unchlorinated water. The water should be room temperature—not too cold or hot. Let it sit overnight if needed, or bring it up to temp with a small amount of boiling water.

  1. Prepare the Brew Bag
Place 4 cups (1 L) of Optimize Organics Compost & Castings Blend and ¼ cup (60 ml) of Microbe Multiplier into your mesh tea bag. Zip shut and submerge into the water. Gently massage the bag to get water evenly throughout the contents, helping microbes disperse and begin activating.

  2. Dissolve the Molasses
In a small container, mix 1 tsp (5 ml) of Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses into warm water until fully dissolved. Pour into the brew.

  3. Add the Fish Hydrolysate
Stir in 1 tbsp (15 ml) of Wild Fish Hydrolysate.

  4. Start Aeration
Add a bubbler or air stone connected to a sufficiently sized air pump for your brew volume. Keep the air running constantly for 24–36 hours. In cooler rooms, allow up to 48 hours to fully develop microbial populations.

  5. Use Promptly for Best Results
Compost tea is best used immediately after brewing, while microbial life is most active. You have a 6-12 hour window to apply after the brew is done. After that, microbial die-off increases quickly, and the tea loses its effectiveness. Always keep aerating until use.

  6. 🔬 Optimize Your Brew with a Microscope
Want to take your compost tea to the next level? Using a simple microscope allows you to monitor microbial activity and pinpoint when your brew reaches peak biology—so you can apply it at just the right time for maximum benefit.
