Citric Acid (Non-GMO) — Natural pH Down

Lower the pH of your nutrient solution the clean, organic way. Our food-grade, non-GMO citric acid is a gentle and effective alternative to harsh synthetic pH down products — perfect for growers who care about what goes into their water.

Why use citric acid as pH down?

Most tap and well water comes out of the tap too alkaline for plants to properly absorb nutrients. When pH sits above the ideal range (typically 5.5–6.5 for hydroponics and 6.0–7.0 for soil), key nutrients like iron, phosphorus, and manganese become "locked out" — meaning your plants can't take them up no matter how well you feed them.

Citric acid lowers pH naturally, breaks down cleanly, and won't introduce phosphates or sulfates into your reservoir like phosphoric or sulfuric acid-based pH down products often do.

How to use

  1. Test your starting pH. Mix your nutrients into your water first, then measure the pH using a reliable pH meter for accurate, repeatable readings.
  2. Start small. Citric acid is potent. Begin with about ¼ teaspoon per gallon (roughly 1g per 4L), stir thoroughly, and let it settle for a minute.
  3. Re-test and adjust. Measure again and add more in small increments until you hit your target pH range.
  4. Check daily. Citric acid is a weak organic acid, so pH can drift back up over a few days, especially in recirculating systems. Re-test and top up as needed.

Tip: For easier dosing, dissolve citric acid in a small amount of warm water first to create a concentrated solution, then add it to your reservoir drop by drop.
